I debated from 1967-68. Dick Huseman and Chester Gibson were my coaches. After debate I went to law school at UGA. I then went to work as an Asst District Atty in Cobb County. In 1974 I was elected to the State Senate where I served until 1990. I ran for governor of Georgia in 1990 and was defeated. I ran for the Georgia House of Representatives in 1992 and was elected. I served there until 1998 when I was elected governor. I served as governor until 2003. I was defeated for reelection in 2002 (I get beat about every 10 years). I am married to my college sweetheart and we have three grown children. Our son is a computer engineer, a daughter is a lawyer practicing law with me, and the youngest daughter is getting her PhD at UGA in special ed. We have 4 grandchildren. I am practicing law in Marietta in a small family firm one block off the square.
Since leaving UGA and debate, Ben has been an Assistant Professor in the School of Communication Studies at Ohio University in the other Athens -- Athens, Ohio. He pretends to judge at NFA tournaments on a highly irregular basis and reads far too much about genetics and science policy.
After graduation I earned graduate degrees at Yale and Southern Seminary. I forever cherish the ideal of examining both sides of an issue and remembering Joubert's quote that it is better to debate an issue and not resolve it than to resolve and issue without debating it. I am in my twenty-second year as pastor of the First Baptist Church in LaGrange, Ga.
After leaving UGA I worked in the telecommunications industry for 11 years in Arkansas, Georgia, Texas, and Missouri. I then entered full-time ministry, obtaining a master's degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas, in 1991. I met and married my wife, Julie (Baylor '89), while attending seminary. We have 2 children: Steven and Marissa. I have served churches in Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Missouri, and I am currently serving as pastor of Bethel Baptist Church in Graham, Texas. (A side note: After all these years, debate is still in my blood! I recently attended an L-D District Qualifying Tournament here at Graham High School as a spectator. The coach noticed that I was keeping a flow, and asked me to critique the debaters. I hope to volunteer to help with the team next year.)
Currently earning PhD in Biblical Studies with concentration in Christian Counseling. Would like to say hello to May, Berto, Chris, Lexey, Margaret, Bill, Michael, Tim and all of my other buddies from UGA.

Trial attorney in San Diego since 1980 after graduation from University of Virginia law school.
While getting my doctorate at UGA (1989-1995) I had the opportunity to assist with the coaching, particularly the novices. After a 3 year tour at Duquesne University (1994-1997) as Director of Debate, I came to Morehead State University in Morehead, KY as an assistant professor of speech communication. Four years later, I was tenured and promoted to associate professor. Then that summer I was appointed Associate Dean of International Education. Now instead of hauling debaters across country for weekend tournaments, I spend a lot of time traveling the world--often with students. It is a great job.
I am currently in the masters in human sexuality studiesprogram at San Francisco State University. I received my BA from UGA in Geography with a minor in history.
Completed Bachelor and Masters programs in Communications at Georgia State University and have a moderately successful career as a Corporate Art Consultant. Active Licensed Mediator for Cobb County Superior Court, specializing in family and divorce issues. Mother of five grown children and proud grandmother of two perfect little boys. At the end of the debate season of 1972, I left the speech department and went over to the UGA business school. From 1974 to 1976, I took a leave to direct the bicentennial youth debates in Washington, D.C. I returned in 1976 as head of the management department at UGA and then left UGA in 1990 to become Dean of the College of Business Administration at the University of Central Florida. In 1996, I left my post as Dean to do a sabattical with the Corporate Knowledge Center at the University of Southern California. Today, I have my own executive coaching firm which is not as much fun as coaching debate but the pay is much better. I have written several books in the last few years one of which is The Leader As Coach: How To Coach A Winning Team and How The Brain Works: The Secret To Great Leadership. If you want to learn more about my current activities, please check out my website at www.richardchuseman.com.

I had no experience in debate until I joined the Novice Debate Team at UGA in 1989. It's amazing how much one can learn by trying something new and intimidating. I had more fun watching my more experienced peers, but they respected us "novice" debaters for giving it a try! With a B.A. in Speech Communications, I have found my niche in Telecommunications. I have been in Telecom Management since 1999, married since 1991 and have two wonderful children. We are huge Bulldog fans and there is no doubt in my mind that they will want to attend UGA as well. Thanks Ed for reminding me of the fun experience I had as a college debater!

Currently, I am a partner at Morris, Schneider,&Prior, LLC where my practice is creditor representation in bankruptcy. I have fond memories of the late nights preparing for tournaments and the many road trips. Would love to hear from all the former UGA debaters!

Following clerkships on for judges on the district court in Chicago and the federal appellate court in Atlanta, Jennifer was an associate with a law firm in Washington, D.C. Finally taking Patti Gorham's well-reasoned advice, Jennifer is now an associate with Sutherland, Asbill and Brennan LLP in Atlanta.
